GGOC Co-Director, Traci, will be presenting “Yellow Peril: Dismantling White Psychology’s Narratives of the Model Minority" as part of the Gender Spectrum Professionals' Symposium.

A bit about the workshop, "The model minority is in peril. With increased violence, and media attention finally naming these acts as hate crimes, the mental wellness of the Trans/NB AAPI community is in great need of competent care. The AAPI experience is shifting in its relationship to the anti-racist struggle as a targeted group rather than as just an allied community, and white psychology narratives lack the tools to address this increasing and complicated need. Exacerbating the experience for trans youth is their relationship to their collective units, particularly as communities turn inward for safety.

This workshop highlights the unique intersections of the Asian American experience, historically and in the age of COVID. Attendees will learn how past and contemporary media representations of Asian Americans have created a distorted reflection of self-worth for many AAPI people and learn alternative narratives that invite AAPI trans youth into a richer understanding of their identity, their struggle, and ultimately, their healing."
